Known as ‘Scotland’s Castle Country’, there are more than 260 castles in the Aberdeenshire region. With more castles per acre than any other part of the UK, there are plenty to choose from.
Just a few miles from Portlethen, Dunottar Castle can be found on a clifftop overlooking the sea. There are a few steps to climb but don’t let that put you off! The nearby town of Stonehaven also provides an opportunity to walk or cycle along a picturesque route. Also close by, is the magnificent 16th century Crathes Castle, surrounded by magnificent gardens and standing against a backdrop of rolling hills.
A little further afield is Aberdeenshire’s most famous castle, Balmoral, which is open during the Spring and Summer months, after being the residence for the Royal Family.
